Scottish drive-system specialist Intradrive has begun production of the GD8, an integrated e-bike motor and eight-speed gearbox that replaces the conventional derailleur and cassette. The system is making its production-bike debut in two European e-MTBs: the new Obscur Enyx and a GD8-equipped version of Alutech’s ePelmo.
The sealed GD8 unit is rated at 250 W, reaches a claimed 700 W peak and weighs 4.5 kg. Its electronically controlled gearbox provides a 480% range, wireless shifting and automatic downshifts, with claimed shift times of about 0.1 seconds. Intradrive uses the Shimano EP8 frame-mounting interface, which should make the system easier for bike manufacturers to integrate. Final drive can be handled by either a chain or a belt.
Obscur, a new French brand created by composites specialist Workshape, has designed its carbon Enyx around the GD8. The all-mountain bike combines 150 mm of rear travel with a 160 mm fork and mixed wheel sizes. It uses a chain drive and a removable 842 Wh battery positioned low in the frame.
German manufacturer Alutech has taken a different approach with its 150 mm ePelmo platform, pairing the GD8 with a Gates belt drive. Together, the two bikes offer an early indication of how integrated motor-gearbox systems may reduce exposed drivetrain parts while giving frame designers more freedom over weight distribution and suspension layout.
