German manufacturer Nicolai has introduced the R20 MGU AON Edition, an electric downhill bike designed to climb back to the top without a shuttle or lift. Developed with Swiss frame specialist Gamux, the limited model adapts the suspension layout and geometry of the Gamux Sego race bike while adding Pinion’s integrated Motor.Gearbox.Unit.
The Pinion MGU E1.12 combines electric assistance and a 12-speed electronic gearbox in a single unit positioned low in the frame. It delivers up to 600 watts of peak power and as much as 400% assistance; Nicolai quotes up to 160 Nm at the rear wheel in the lowest four gears. Power comes from a removable FIT Tubepack battery, with buyers choosing between 800 Wh and 1,060 Wh capacities. A Gates carbon belt replaces the conventional chain and derailleur.
The hand-welded aluminium R20 uses a high-pivot rear suspension system with 200 mm of travel, paired with a 203 mm Manitou Dorado Pro Silver fork. Its mixed-wheel setup combines a 29-inch front wheel with a 27.5-inch rear, while a 63.3-degree head angle underlines the bike’s downhill focus. A steep 78-degree seat angle and dropper post address the ride back uphill.
At 29.5 kg and €14,999 before the larger battery upgrade, the R20 is a highly specialised machine rather than a mainstream e-MTB. However, its integration of a gearbox motor, belt drive and very large battery highlights how e-bike drivetrains are expanding into disciplines previously dependent on external uplift.
